The Cartier Santos de Cartier is one of my all-time favorite watches, and I am not alone. It is so widely admired that we almost don’t see it for what it is anymore. The Santos’s iconic square case and exposed screws make it a timeless design statement. A new or pre-owned Cartier Santos de Cartier is still one of the best everyday watches you can buy, especially if you value heritage and elegance.

So today, I would like to take you shopping for a pre-owned example. We’ll look at a few neo-vintage and recent Santos de Cartier models and cover some reasons for picking one over the other. Unless you want your watch to shout that you’ve made it, that is a good thing.

The Santos Galbee features a mechanical movement (or quartz in some variants) and a two-tone bracelet option. The trade-off is primarily visible in the bracelet. This older generation features a thinner clasp and hollow links. Don’t mistake this for a weakness, though. They are built to survive. They just don’t have that lovely bank-vault-like feeling of modern Cartier bracelets. I found this pre-owned Santos Galbee in very good condition at a vintage dealer for €3,500.

Pre-owned Cartier Santos #2: Santos 100 Ref. 2671

Okay, what if you want that bank-vault-like feeling only modern Cartier can give you? Here, we enter the current generation of Cartier Santos. The Large Model WSSA0071, introduced around 2018, had one massive feature — an upsized 40mm case with automatic winding. When I went hands-on with the Santos 100, I felt it was just too chunky. For some reason, I find the Galbee too small for my wrist.
